QUESTION 1: Cultural identities and artistic practices in the Mediterranean Area. A dialogue still possible?, by Emiliano Paoletti

Does any intercultural dialogue exist today between the shores of the Mediterranean? The idea that culture can contribute to the sustainable, peaceful and democratic development in this area is still relevant today? Or maybe the economic and political crisis in Europe, the rising of pan-Arabism in the MENA region, the unequal growth of national economies in the African continent and the complex relationships that exist in today’s global world compel us to reconsider this notion? How cultural production and contemporary artistic practices can contribute to the development of this debate? The new generations with their needs and their languages are showing any new trend in this context?

QUESTION 1: ArtLab seminar

Starting from the assumptions of question 1, BJCEM, in collaboration with Fondazione Fitzcarraldo, is organizing, on the occasion of ArtLab 2012, a panel of international operators with the intention to open a debate on the original theme. The panel’s aim is to start a path of observation and analysis that can contribute to re-think a cultural policy for the Mediterranean.

Nowadays the need for a profound rethinking of global policy has strongly emerged together with the overriding research for new scenarios. Those two aspects represent a starting point, which is usefull to underline the centrality of the pressures towards the future that are shaping part of nowadays living models.
Art has an important role in this debate and, through contemporary languages, it acts as a knowledge mediator and a relationship bearer, thanks to its different means of expression which, though sometimes seem related to individuality, strongly contribute to the overall change. Continue reading
